“Dance Again” sees Gomez returned to the familiar territory of EDM, taking an updated approach to disco as she brings a determination to the dance-floor, striving to be jovial as her voice is grounded and centered in the production, making her sound present and pleasantly sure of herself. “Rare” depends almost solely on the detached wispiness of Gomez’s voice to bring a dismissive vulnerability to the song, pairing her off with an odd timpani drum beat that helps her reach the exact “I’m done with it all” attitude the song demands.
Kicking off with the title track, Gomez addresses one of her ex-lovers with the affirmation that she has realized her self-worth and is no longer willing to settle for someone who isn’t giving her the attention she deserves. All this brings us to the release of Rare, the third solo album from Gomez that was anticipated for release much sooner than the five years it took to see the light of day. She alluded to this on her next release with DJ Marshmello,“Wolves” and though she continued to release standalone singles such as the soundtrack single, “Back to You”, and “I Can’t Get Enough” with Benny Blanco and J Balvin, most of the focus remained on her highly publicized relationships with The Weeknd and perennial off-and-on flame Justin Bieber, with whom it was definitively deemed “off” when he married his other on-and-off lover, Hailey Baldwin. Though Gomez had launched her successful collab with Kygo, “It Ain’t Me”, as well as critically acclaimed singles “Bad Liar” and “Fetish”, the singer was battling complications that had arisen from her lupus to the point that she had received a kidney transplant. However, as Gomez readied to follow-up her most successful era with a new one, life took a turn for her. Gomez seemed primed to take up the mantle of pop mainstay, without too much of the vanguard chameleonic spirit of her Disney peer Miley Cyrus or the self-destructive temperament of her other Disney peer Demi Lovato. This is understandable since Gomez herself seemed to have fully crossed over into a more mature yet radio-focused sound as she broke away from Disney and relaunched under Interscope, and accordingly, began racking up hit after hit with three of the album’s four singles landing squarely within the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100.
